Talmon writes in a fluid, pleasing style. Presents detail, sometimes considerable, but always clear. The quotes and references dominate the pages, not Talmon's opinions.Preface explains, "The present enquiry is concerned with the expectation of universal regeneration which animated men and movements in the first half of the nineteenth century. No period before or after has experienced so luxurious a flowering of Utopian schemes purporting to offer a coherent, complete and final solution to the problem of evil." (15)This book is act two in the drama of Messianic totalitarian democracy that is still continuing. (16)"This book is not a history of ideas. Its subject is a climate of ideas, a frame of mind, we may say faith. It is undertaken in the conviction that faith is an identifiable factor in shaping human urges, attitudes and actions." The reformation, Puritanism are history. "But would these circumstances have resulted in what they did, without that all-embracing faith, the first principles laid down in a book many centuries before?" (17)Intriguing question.Chapter one starts with - From Technocracy To Theocracy. "Count Claude de Saint-Simon was perhaps the most fascinating of all the nineteenth century Messiahs and prophets." (35) Colonel in American Revolution as a young man because he believed America would influence Europe. Provides eighty pages on him and his movement in France. Many direct quotes from his writing and his disciples. They proclaimed Saint-Simon as the successor to Moses and Jesus. Movement destroyed by the desire of leaders to eliminate family unit. Women to be equal - and isolated. (111)Redolent of today.Presents Fichte, Kant and Hegel in Germany. Kant and Hegel wrote in response to Rousseau. Kant "proved" human mind can create reality. Hegel proclaimed the French Revolution as showed "the recognition of the principal that thought ought to govern spiritual reality. This was accordingly a glorious mental dawn." (179)German idealism had powerful effects.
